Another excellent turnout for the Bembridge Illusions over the weekend with 26 competitors over the two days (22 on Saturday & 20 on Sunday) competing for Vernon’s Memorial Trophy in memory of Vernon Stratton. The weather on both days was a balmy 9 degrees Celsius but with ‘not a cloud in the sky’ as the song goes.
There were 4 races on Saturday in the harbour with wind veering and backing between 80 -140 degrees and fluctuating between 5 – 10 knots. There was a General Recall for the first start of the third race on Saturday with the restart under Flag U. Unfortunately for Justin Biddle in 131 (who went round the end and restarted) and Mike Toogood in 142 were both DSQ, particularly as they came in 2nd & 5th respectively. By popular demand the course layout went back to having a spreader at just above 90 degrees and a good distance apart to prevent a scrummage at the weather mark,
Sunday’s two races were a drifting match in a slight Easterly slop; the wind veered and backed beween 80 – 115 degrees and fluctuated between 3 – 7 knots. The fleet mutinied when offered a third race!
A big thanks to Alexis Dogilewski who looked after both days with help from Rob Mathieson & Martin Bonham on Saturday and James Row & Mark Downer on Sunday.
